Exclusive: “Starmer Needs to Go Before May 7th” – Midlands Labour MP Tells GB Politics

By Charlie Simpson | April 19, 2026

A Midlands Labour MP has told me privately this afternoon that they believe Keir Starmer needs to resign before the upcoming local elections to avoid an “electoral crisis.”

The MP described the Peter Mandelson vetting scandal as a major embarrassment for the party, from which there is “no coming back.”

They argued that it is time for fresh leadership to show voters that Labour is not “more of the same.”

The scandal erupted after revelations that Lord Peter Mandelson failed initial security vetting for his appointment as UK Ambassador to the United States in early 2025. Security officials recommended denying him the necessary clearance due to risk factors, but the Foreign Office overruled that decision. Starmer has insisted he was not informed of the failed vetting at the time and only learned of it recently, describing the situation as “staggering” and “unforgivable.” The affair has raised questions about due process, ministerial accountability, and whether Parliament was misled, intensifying pressure on the Prime Minister.

The Labour MP, who has been a strong supporter of Starmer through multiple crises since the 2024 general election, said in an off-the-record phone call this afternoon that it is now time for Starmer to “go and accept what’s happened.”

I have been asked to keep the Labour MP’s identity private, but they warned: “If he doesn’t go himself, then myself and others will be prepared to force a vote of no confidence.”
I have known the Labour MP for over a year, and they have always been very supportive of Starmer in our previous conversations. This dramatic shift clearly signals that the Mandelson vetting scandal has gone one step too far for some in the party.
