Golders Green Terror Attack: Full Breakdown and Key Details

The Jewish community in Golders Green has faced another antisemitic attack after the Jewish community charity Hatzolah was set alight in an arson attack on 23 March.

At around 11:45am, two members of the Jewish community – Nachman Moshe ben Chaya Sarah and Moshe ben Baila, aged 34 and 76 respectively – were victims of a double stabbing outside a synagogue in broad daylight. Both men are currently in hospital receiving treatment, with one in a critical condition.

Footage shared online shows the attacker stabbing one of the victims in the neck before being seen putting on a kippah at a nearby bus stop. The 45-year-old suspect had been photographed earlier carrying a blade in broad daylight, and CCTV footage has since been released showing him attempting to attack a man wearing traditional Orthodox Jewish clothing in a nearby street.

He was apprehended by police officers who chased him down the street and confronted him with only a taser before making the arrest. The attacker was treated in what appeared to be a Hatzolah ambulance – from the same charity that faced the arson attack last month – before being taken into custody.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley commended the officers, describing their actions as “nothing short of extraordinary”. During his interview, members of the public called for his resignation. Local Labour MP Sarah Sackman said: “If you want to understand the actual threat that Jews face, just turn on the news today.” In contrast, the leader of the Green Party suggested it was important to “distinguish between the actual threat to the Jewish community and the perception of unsafety”, appearing to downplay the daily risks faced by Jewish communities.

Commissioner Rowley described the situation the officers faced: “They confronted a man they believed to be a terrorist, who refused to show his hands, who was violent and continued to pose a clear threat. These were not armed officers, and they feared that he was carrying an explosive device. Using only their training, their courage and their tasers, they managed to detain him whilst he continued to try and attack and stab them.”

A further Cobra meeting has been held in response to the antisemitic attack, with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood pledging that the government will “strain every sinew” to keep Jewish people safe.

Leader of the Opposition Kemi Badenoch said: “This is something we know has been escalating in terms of terrorist attacks and antisemitic incidents, targeting Jews, intimidation and violence. Speaking to the community this morning… it’s very scary for them. They’re absolutely terrified.”

Nigel Farage has asked “where’s the action” to help and support Jewish communities across the UK, who continue to suffer from constant attacks which are, sadly, now “totally unsurprising”.

One victim is now in a stable condition and the other remains in a more serious condition, according to Rabbi Levi Shapiro.
